What are subsequent assignments?

Subsequent assignments are ISC assignments for personnel who have completed a previous ISC, masters or journeyman term and desire to go overseas again. Subsequent assignments are not for those who have only been on a summer missions or other volunteer project!

Retired or previously resigned IMB missionaries may not go through screening conference or orientation unless it has been a significant amount of time since their previous service.

How do I get started in this process?

From the former missionary side–returned personnel will often contact us about serving again. This may be right after they return or several years after their previous service. Returned personnel generally communicate with the ISC team by phone and e-mail inquiring about how to serve again.

From the field side–there may be times that a need on the field causes the IMB to approach returned personnel about going again. The Regional Office will contact our office to get the process going.

Personnel who have been off the field for years may be processed as new applicants including ISC/Journeyman conference and orientation at the discretion of OMP or the regional office.

What pieces of information do you need?

There are some important pieces of information that we must have in order to move ahead with a subsequent assignment:

  • A positive field evaluation from your previous term of service
  • Evidence of continued good health, securing medical clearance, with an updated CHQ
  • Skills to do the requested new job on the field
  • Completion of the subsequent assignment update forms, returned to the ISC team

For those who have been off the field for three or more months, in addition to the above we need a page or so typed report to append your life history, to include:

  • Information regarding your previous term of service overseas
  • What you have been doing in the states, vocationally and ministerially
  • Why you desire to return to the field, sharing your calling

How am I approved for a subsequent assignment?

No matter what one is told on the field about going on a subsequent assignment, the above pieces of information must be in place.

Once all materials are in order, medical clearance has been secured, and a proper interview has been conducted (generally by telephone when the applicant is in the States), we will approach the staff committee about your approval for this subsequent assignment. This can be a fairly quick process if everything is in order!

For those who returned to the states and expect to return to the field right away–you may have your return tickets to the field, but without our process completed, the payroll and benefits departments will not know you are on the field! So, if you want to receive support from the IMB, the information here is essential.

How do I choose between an extension and a subsequent assignment?

Perhaps this can help you make up your mind … The better option for a less than 24-month assignment is to simply extend your original term up to 36 months. If one desires just an additional four to 12 months, the choice is to extend. This is the option to consider in order to be good stewards of Cooperative Program and Lottie Moon monies. The benefit?

  • Decisions are made right on the field
  • Support continues uninterrupted
  • There is no need for securing medical clearance
  • The ISC/Journeyman team does not get involved
  • There is no additional staff committee approval
  • The cost of airfare to the States is limited to the completion of the entire assignment
