Getting through airport security
The
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that all bags
checked at U.S. commercial airports will be screened for explosives.
(TSA) has issued new guidelines for
passengers, including a recommendation that they have checked bags
unlocked. When screeners determine that checked bags need to be physically
inspected, they must open the bags. In that situation, locked bags are
forcibly opened. TSA recommends using cable or zip ties rather than locks.
TSA is working on a system to provide travelers with free seals that will
substitute for locks but can be opened by screeners.
TSA has also issued the following
recommendations for passengers. Following these steps will expedite the
baggage screening process and decrease the likelihood that a bag will be
delayed for security screening:
- DO NOT pack food or beverages in checked
bags
- Pack shoes on top of other contents in
checked bags
- DO NOT stack books; spread them
throughout a bag
TSA also told passengers that they could
reduce the likelihood that a screener has to handle personal items by
packing them in clear plastic bags.
Another tip for clearing airport security:
Take a self-addressed, stamped envelope
with you through the screening section in case you have to leave an item
behind. Just put the “contraband” item in the envelope, seal it, go
back to the lobby/ticketing area to mail it, and then go through
screening. The screeners will be satisfied and you will still have your
personal item.
