Health Considerations
Health conditions that could prevent a volunteer from
accepting this assignment
It is not possible to contemplate all the possible health issues that could prevent a person from coming. This should be discussed with the candidate's physician. If you have specific questions, please send thme to eavolunteer@pobox.com.
Factors that could influence the volunteer's ability to do
this job
The candidate should consult with their physician regarding living in China and immunizations that might be needed. Housing is provided by the university and can range from first to fifth floor living with no elevator. About the only other physical activity would be walking to and from your apartment and classroom. The climate can range from 40 to 90 degrees depending upon the time of year. Generally there is little polution, but there is a steel plant approximately 5 miles away.
Health care facilities available
There is a student health care center on campus. There are also several hospitals in the area. However, we are not qualified to comment on the quality of care provided. Generally, it should be understood that health care in China is not up to U.S. standards. Some prescription drugs cannot be obtained in China and consideration needs to be given to any regularly medications that need to be taken.
Travel, Location and Culture
Geographic Settings
The university is located on the outskirts of town. The surrounding area is rural and agricultural. The area itself is at an altitude of approximately one mile high.
Other (customs, clothing, shopping, etc.)
By U.S. standards the people are very conservative in terms of dress. Women wear earrings, lipsticks, etc. Among men and women, lip, nose, tongue and other piercings and tatoos are not normally found. Some young men wear earrings, but most do not. There is very little, if any, western style food in the area, but the local Chinese food is quite delicious. Western foods can be purchased but at some expense and in another town at quite a distance away.
Available Housing
Housing, utilities, and furniture are provided free of charge by the university with the exception of telephone and internet. There are two options in terms of housing. Older housing is available with a kitchen. Newer housing does not have a kitchen but is quite nice with heat and air conditioning, which are not available in the older units. The university will make arrangements so that cooking can be done in the newer units if so desired.
Mode of in-country travel
Possible Visa/Passport Restrictions
A work visa is required and the university will make arrangements for this. This visa needs to be in hand upon arrival. Do not get a tourist visa just to get in country! Talk with the in-country representative who will arrange the visa.
Items/materials to bring to the field
Bring clothing, books, personal items. Remember that the electrical current in China is 220 volts at 50 cycles, so your electrical items purchased in the U.S. will not work here without an electrical converter.
