Health Considerations
Factors that could influence the volunteer's ability to do
this job
It is quite hot here; the temperature is usually in the upper 80's with high humidity. Tropical diseases are rare, and medical care is excellent. This assignment will involve a lot of walking, but the terrain will rarely be rugged or steep (unless you go mountain climbing). There will be some boat travel as well.
Health care facilities available
We have a very good private hospital and excellent doctors.
Travel, Location and Culture
Geographic Settings
North Borneo has awe inspiring mountains, beaches, islands, and tropical jungles. The villages which the group will focus on are primarily coastal. The team will travel thoughout North Borneo focusing on a Muslim Unreached People Group. The people are very firendly and hospitable especially towards foreigners. The team will encounter many people who speak English. I have travelled extensively throughout SE Asia and this location and people group are my favorite without question.
Other (customs, clothing, shopping, etc.)
The team will be expected to conform to many of the cultural expectations of the people they are ministering among. This will mean things like wearing long pants instead of shorts, drinking and eating what is offered, staying in their houses, using their toilets, and doing whatever it takes to win an opportunity to share the Gospel with these people.
Available Housing
Volunteers will stay in a local hotel; the hotel will be clean but basic. There will be an air-conditioner in each room and hot water for bathing. The team may also stay in Lasa villages, where there will be no air-conditioning and no hot water. Conditions there will be more primitive but it is essential that the team connect with the people, love them, and gain a greater understanding of what life is like for the Lasa.
Mode of in-country travel
bus
Possible Visa/Passport Restrictions
None, the volunteers will be given a 90 day "visa upon arrival" when they arrive in the country.
Items/materials to bring to the field
Bible, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, collection of pictures illustrating your family, work, house, and faith.
Additional information
The Lasa live along the coast of a large island; their homes are generally built on stilts out over the ocean, which allows for a great view and inexpensive plumbing. Having fled the fighting and poverty in their own country, they find refuge here. Most Lasa have never had a relationship with a true believer, let alone heard the Gospel. They are entrenched in darkness, & it often seems that there is no hope for them to find the Savior. Prayer is the light that brings hope to these dark villages; through prayer doors are open for the Gospel. As volunteers come and pray & share their lives & hearts with the Lasa, the Lasa will see what it means to follow Jesus and be drawn to his light. You will walk on rickety boards through these oceanfront villages, seeing the filth, poverty and sin that keep the Lasa mired in the muck. During this time you will be able to love on the Lasa children, to pray for the sick and hopefully to see God move in a mighty way in the hardened hearts of the Lasa.
