Health Considerations
Factors that could influence the volunteer's ability to do
this job
You will be staying in a camp environment. Housing is indoors but there is no A/C. Temps in July can range from low 60's to low 80's. You will encounter mosquitos during the day and/or while sleeping. Be prepared.
Health care facilities available
Western type medical care will be about 4-5 hours away by car. You should bring people who are not likely to require immediate medical care. We are 3 hours outside St. Pete. Traffic could add an hour or so to the trip to the hospital in St. Pete. Emergency medical care is available but the adqueacy beyond first aid is not a guarantee. you should bring a well equipped 1st Aid kit. You might consider anti-itch crea and/or antihistamines also.
Travel, Location and Culture
Geographic Settings
Camp is 3 hours by bus south of St. Petersburg. There is a small but beautiful lake at the camp. The kids will swim daily. Team should bring swim wear & join them as you can. There is a small store at the camp where you can buy snacks, bottled water, & fruit. Only Russian Rubles are accepted. Money exchange is available at the airport & the rate is generally very competative with other rates outside the airport. Travis & Sue Barfield, our ministry partners, will be with you in the camp all week.
Other (customs, clothing, shopping, etc.)
Camp leadership is from our Russian Baptist Partners. Expect 8 college aged Russian counselors (1 girl/1boy per team); 10 cooks; 5 or so adult supervisors/helpers (pastors, maintenance, supplies, etc.) for camp. Children are Church members and/or their family/friends. Some kids may stay more than one week. Clothing should be conservative. No shorts above knees. No sleeve-less shirts. Appropriate sleepware necessary. Showers available. One-piece swimware for women. Avoid excessive makeup/jewelry.
Available Housing
You'll be housed at the camp in finished or partially finished rooms on cots. Best to purchase sleeping bags in St. Pete. Cot's have mattresses but you'll need to be pretty easily pleased (smile). Expect 1 Star level (high on love, low on amminities - no peppermint on your pillow at camp). Hotel accomodations in St. Petersburg on either end of the week of camp. You'll need to book these hotel accomodations as early as possible. Expect 3 Star level. St. Pete sees 2 million tourists per summer.
