Health Considerations
Health conditions that could prevent a volunteer from accepting this assignment If a person is susceptible to heat stroke or heat related problems they should not come.
Factors that could influence the volunteer's ability to do this job This work takes place in a tropical (read HOT and HUMID) climate. Depending on the time of year it can be very hot and humid. 80% of the ministry time will be outside and a lot of standing and walking is required. If a person is susceptible to heat stroke or heat-related problems they may was to reconsider coming. Also, asthmatics or those on regular medications need to be SURE to bring their inhalers and/or a good supply of their regular medications along.
Health care facilities available The HCF's here are internationally recognized, very modern and well equipped to handle any need. Many of the doctors have studied and graduated from major universities in the US. As a field missionary I know the apprehension of not knowing what might be available in case of an emergency, and I want you to know that you need not worry. This area depends on tourists for its economy, so there are VERY good health care facilities here.
Travel, Location and Culture
Geographic Settings You will be in a beach resort area. The climate is tropical (read HOT and HUMID). The air is clean year round with lots of sun and beautiful sea breezes. The seasons here are the same as in the US with "winter" being from November to January or February, but the temperatures here are much warmer than in the US during those months. Come get out of the snow for a week or so!
Other (customs, clothing, shopping, etc.) Cool summer clothing made of cotton is best. Dress casually but conservatively. This country is generally a conservative place, but shorts, tennis shoes, t-shirts, and flip flops are fine because this is a resort community. Please do not bring any short shorts, tank tops or tube tops. Please also read the "FAQ" document from the field missionary. If you have not received it yet please email and request it at: scptravel@pobox.com
Available Housing You will be housed in inexpensive hotels where Chinese tourists stay. If there are no budget constraints then the decision about where the team stays will be made based on strategic and project purposes. Please refer to the "SCP FU Ltr.2" document for further information. If you have not received that yet please request it at: scptravel@pobox.com
Mode of in-country travel Van
Possible Visa/Passport Restrictions No prearranged visa is needed. The passport used MUST have at least six months of validity left in it upon the date of arrival.
Items/materials to bring to the field Volunteers may want to bring fifty or so "business cards" with their names and email addresses on them for establishing relationships with the tourists they meet. Beyond that, sunglasses and anything to shade against the sun is good.
Additional information
Volunteers coming to work with SCP can be involved on many levels. We ask each team to consider how they can help their church foster ownership of this volunteer trip. Not only can they be praying for this project and the team while they are overseas but we would like to provide an opportunity for the church to help provide for the materials being distributed to the Chinese. It is our desire that your church see themselves as a part of the team that is coming; actively participating, showing their support as their members go out and share the Gospel. As you sign up to come, would your church consider providing a $1 per packet donation through the IMB for the packets your team will pass out? Normally a team will pass out (on average) around 1,000 packets while here. More information is provided about this in the "FAQ" document. If you have not received it yet, please email Tim G. at scptravel@pobox.com so he can send you one. Thank you for praying and considering this request.
